The Patent Well is an interactive piece of a larger installation that Hornall Anderson created for Ciena called the Patent Vortex. The Vortex is a large, suspended sculpture that pays tribute to Ciena's culture of invention. The Patent Well sits beneath the sculpture. It is a touch-activated repository for their hundreds of patents. We wanted to take something that was potentially very dry, and make it exploratory and fun. Each virtual page in the well represents a unique patent, while the different stacks represent categories. Users can flip through the stacks, or search by keyword.
